Do you ever think about what joy means to you? For me, small moments of joy can be anything from enjoying a warm cup of something to reading a book or snuggling up in bed, listening to the rain outside. Currently, I'm sitting in my cosy living room writing this, with only a few warm lights around me, while a storm rages outside. I feel a small spark of something inside me, which has brightened up an otherwise gloomy day.
One of the things that got me through the many lockdowns during the COVID-19 crisis, was taking each day at a time and trying to find ways to experience joy every day. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture and it's okay to enjoy the simple, everyday moments. Constantly pursuing grandiose experiences that may not be attainable can be exhausting.
So, these are the little things that bring me joy:
Watching a TV show that I've been following. This can often give me something to look forward to, especially when it's been a trying day.
Cuddling up with a book and chocolate.
Sleeping in new sheets.
Perfecting my tree pose during my yoga practice.
Going for a walk in nature (especially on a winter’s day).
Waking up early to read.
But the thing is, what gives someone joy differs from person to person and is unique. Personally, I love to write, and putting pen to paper makes me happy.
For it could be that joy is found tucked in corners, in the day-to-day hum of mundanity. If we take the time to observe and appreciate the small moments, we will discover that there is an abundance of joy to be found in every nook and cranny of our existence. It's a hidden treasure, that's been right in front of us all along.
So, ask yourself, what little things bring you joy? Cherish them and make them a part of your daily life, and you'll see the difference it makes.
